Barbados Joins OECD’s Carbon Mitigation Framework

Bridgetown, Barbados – August 28, 2025Barbados has joined the Inclusive Framework on Carbon Mitigation Approaches (IFCMA), the OECD’s leading initiative on global climate cooperation. The framework now includes 60 jurisdictions committed to advancing transparency, coordination, and effective action on emissions.

The IFCMA is designed to improve global impact by sharing data, encouraging best practices, and avoiding fragmented policies. For Barbados, membership aligns the island with emerging global standards and enhances its role in climate diplomacy while protecting competitiveness as a small, open economy.

For small island developing states (SIDS), climate policy is not only environmental, it is also about economic survival. Barbados’ membership ensures the island helps shape frameworks that influence trade, supply chains, and sustainable investment.

This step reflects a broader strategy of aligning national development priorities to global standards. Barbados not only strengthens its voice on the global stage but also helps ensure that international rules reflect the needs of small island states navigating the twin challenges of economic growth and climate resilience.

By joining the IFCMA, Barbados demonstrates its commitment to inclusive, cooperative, and transparent climate action. Additionally, membership and participation in the IFCMA will help to limit the administrative costs and reporting burden as it relates to carbon accounting.
